Power Is the Only Variable That Matters

If Machiavelli were America's AI Czar, he wouldn't ask "is this safe?" He'd ask "who does this make powerful, and is it us?"

Every other question — alignment, existential risk, the welfare of future digital minds — he would file under what he called fantasie: imagined republics that "have never been seen or known to exist in truth." In The Prince, written in 1513 while he was exiled and recovering from the strappado — hung by his wrists with his arms wrenched behind him until the shoulders dislocated, on the order of the very Medici he was now trying to flatter — he made his methodological break explicit: "Many have imagined republics and principalities that have never been seen or known to exist in truth, for it is so far from how one lives to how one ought to live." The entire safety discourse — the open letters, the "pause" petitions, the testimony about humanity's long-term flourishing — is a debate about how one ought to live. Machiavelli wrote his masterpiece precisely to demolish that genre. He would read the AI safety canon the way he read Cicero: as the beautiful, useless product of men who had never had to actually hold power.

So strip the moral vocabulary and ask his question instead. AI is not a technology problem. It is a power-redistribution problem wearing a lab coat.
